SCREENING

Exhibition Focus: Sakuran

Anna Tsuchiya plays a rebellious courtesan seeking for freedom in Sakuran, screening in ArtScience Cinema this June as part of Goddess.

Adapted from a popular manga, Sakuran follows the life of Kiyoha (Anna Tsuchiya) who is sold into a brothel as a young girl in 18th century Edo. Despite her rule-breaking tendencies and thirst for freedom, Kiyoha rises the ranks to become next in line as oiran (head courtesan), while balancing brothel politics and feelings for her lover Sojiro.

The directorial debut of celebrated Japanese photographer Mika Ninagawa, Sakuran dazzles with punchy visuals, brightly-coloured sets and flashy period costumes to echo Anna Tsuchiya’s real-life rebel persona and Kiyoha’s defiant personality. Eschewing historical accuracy for modern sensibilities, the anachronistic world of Sakuran is set to an eclectic soundtrack of jazz, electro and Japanese pop.

Sakuran is screened in conjunction with the exhibition Goddess: Brave.Bold.Beautiful. For more information on related cinema programmes, click here.
